If your computer is running slow then here are some “Errors” you might be seeing:

computer slow* General Error Pop-ups * DLL Errors * Blue Screen * Runtime Errors * Start-up Pop-up Errors * Driver Errors * Java Errors * JavaScript Errors * Invalid Input *

Below are some symptoms I have when my computer is slow:

  • Start-up taking much more time than it used to
  • Several Pop-ups at start-up must be dealt with
  • The first several minutes your computer is running it is locked-up because of programs running in the back ground
  • Your anti-virus program seems to run continuously and slow your computer
  • It is very hard and takes very long to get onto the internet
  • Your browser will time-out before pages can load

And there are of course many more symptoms but these are some of the most common.

I worked on a computer a few months back that literally took 25 minutes to go from start-up to the internet home page. Now that computer is slow! I had never seen one this bad. The owners were going to buy a new one but I told them I would try to fix it first. I did two things to correct and speed up this computer:

  1. I installed more RAM memory
  2. I downloaded a Registry Cleaner

I have used this repair method on many computers since. Now, if you are not a “computer person” then these two fixes might be a little intimidating. But they are actually pretty easy to do yourself. It is my opinion (OK we all have one :) ) that this method will repair about 75% of the “my computer is slow” issues.

My Computer Is Slow – Fix RAM or Registry??

computer too slowOur two best and easiest methods of curing the “computer is slow” problem – adding RAM and organizing and cleaning up your registry. Together you should have a healthier and faster computer.

RAM is Random Access Memory or simply short term memory. Your computer stores certain data in the RAM that it uses frequently or recently so that it can be accessed quickly. This effects dramatically the computer speed. The RAM is different and separate from you regular hard drive memory that stores most of your data, pictures, music, programs, etc.

There are many reasons you could need more RAM. Gaming requires much more memory than just surfing the internet, word processing, etc. But Gaming also requires very fast processor speed. If your computer is slow while play interactive and online games check your game specs and your processor speed. If they are OK then move on to RAM as a possible slow computer help or fix.

We basically use two operating systems today: Windows XP and Windows Vista. The slow running computer I mentioned earlier had an XP operation system. XP requires or uses a great deal more RAM than the newer Vista. This is a positive for Vista but in my opinion Vista has many short comings. If your operating system uses up 75% of your RAM capacity you will have a slow computer.

These are actual screen shots above showing RAM cards. They simply plug into the mother board as shown. On a desktop they can be reached easily by taking off the side panel. If you are not comfortable with this you could ask a technician where you purchase the RAM to show you… most will gladly do so. And the simple installation yourself will save you money and the time of taking your computer in to the repair shop.

Here is a simple way you can determine if your computer’s RAM is adequate. And you can do it now as you read. If you right click on your desktop’s lower tool bar (on an empty spot) you will get a pop-up box. Third from the bottom of that list is “Task Manager”. Click on Task Manager and it will bring you up the “Windows Task Manager” that shows the Applications, Processes, etc. that are running now. Look at the bottom of the box and you should see: Processes: 74; CPU Usage: 4%; Physical Memory: 49% (the figures are what my computer is showing right now)

We are concerned only with the CPU Usage and Physical Memory. CPU Usage is how much of your computer’s processor (or you may think of it as “engine”) is being used. The Physical Memory is the RAM. So this gives you an idea of what is going on inside your computer. Simply put: The closer your Physical Memory is to 100% the harder your CPU has to work.

Computer Slow Do this: Let your slow computer sit still for awhile or until the CPU Usage falls to 20% or lower. What is your Physical Memory % now? With your computer basically sitting idol your RAM or Physical Memory should not be higher than 75%. If it is too high in can make your computer really slow.

So what do you do when “my computer is slow”? Add RAM to it. YOU can do it. Take your computer model number and go to the local Best Buy store and ask for RAM of your computer (cost maybe $25). Ask the Geek behind the service counter to “please” show you where to install it. He is probably working on a computer that he can show you on… in two seconds. Go home and stick it in! That’s it. Your computer will find the new RAM and start using it.

And maybe your computer slowing down will be a thing of the past.

Remember….. if your registry needs optimizing it will give the same readings as if your PC needs additional RAM… Run the Scan and see. Click Fix Slow Computer to go to the scan site.

It won’t cost you anything to run the free scan and see what makes a computer slow. You will probably be surprised.

Good tips! However, I think CPU and physical memory utilization is a function of how many programs are currently open and running. It would be perfectly normal to be above 75% if a person had too many programs running simultaneously. Their computer would indeed run slow, but that’s because they are overloading it – no? I find that my computer often becomes a turtle when I open too many windows on my Internet browser (regardless of which one I am running). Also, what are your thoughts about Windows 7? The article above only mentions XP and Vista. Most of my systems now run Windows 7.
